ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS

The University of Lagos was founded in 1962. It presently has three campuses in Yaba and Surulere. Whereas two of its campuses are located in Yaba (the main campus in Akoka and the recently created campus at the former School of Radiography), its College of Medicine is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere. It is remarkable that all three campuses are located on the mainland of Lagos. Its main campus is largely surrounded by the scenic view of the Lagos lagoon on 802 acres of land in Akoka, in the north-eastern part of Yaba.

From a modest intake of 131 students in 1962, enrolment in the university has now grown to over 40,000. The university’s staff strength is 3,365, made up as follows: 1,386 administrative and technical staff, 1,164 junior staff, and 813 academic staff.

The University of Lagos currently has twelve faculties, namely, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Business Administration, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Pharmacy, Science, and Social Sciences. UNILAG, as the university is fondly called, also offers Master’s and Doctorate degrees in most of the aforementioned programs. In addition, it has two centers, namely, the Centre for Human Rights and the Centre for African Regional Integration and Borderland Studies. The Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the university also offers courses in accounting, business administration, science education, and library and information sciences.

FRESH, FreshER, Freshest

The academic talk helped clarify my roadmap by answering my silent questions and dispelling some of my subtle fears. I was inspired to make good grades in school!

The words were the best part of the event. I was personally encountered, and it led to me answering the altar call, which changed my life forever. The event was indeed a turning point in my life.

Finally, the food was everything to write home about. I enjoyed everything that I got from the UJCF Freshers’ Night and I’m grateful to God for it.

I remember that I went because people were going, plus we would get free dinner…but I can say that I didn’t regret going.

The drama was very lovely, I loved every bit of it…I saw drama on another level unlike the usual devil and Jesus drama I was used to, the word was a blessing, I can’t remember the exact words but the words I heard that day saved me a lot during my year 1 days when I wanted to do some inconvenient things…

Another thing I loved about the freshers service that year was the fact that I was given a Bible (I came out for altar call and was led to meet some counselors). I loved how they interacted with us freely and made it easy for us to open up to them (I still have two of my counsellor’s number).

And of course, the food, it saved me another exercise of cooking that night, I loved the book I was given (it was titled STARTING WELL… I still have it).

Looking back, I’m really grateful I attended freshers service that year…it helped me a lot in my early years in Unilag and I’d advice any fresher I know to attend.

The Fresher’s night was a blessing really. First, it made me understand that as a believer that is a student in Unilag, I need to be faithful to God in my academics.

I also learnt that I have to carry God along in my academics and not do it without him.

The testimonies of the people who graduated with a first class the previous year also encouraged me that if I start well, I can finish well with God on my side. For me, it was an assurance that I could do well in my department.

It was a night of resolve in my heart to not do Unilag without God.

I enjoyed the drama that was staged too, it was funny but very enlightening.

The food too was great. I also met other guys that are Freshers and connected with them.

It was all amazing!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The management of the school announces, from time to time, the window of opportunity to register for courses. Once you’ve paid your fees, you can begin to register for your courses via the student portal before the deadline for registration, which will be announced as the semester progresses. Every student must register for all the courses he or she is to take that semester to qualify to write the exams. These include:

Click on register courses; mark all compulsory courses and electives as required of you in the prospectus. And save
Print course registration for; as you’ll need two copies to be signed, one for the department and the other for you.

The school provides accommodation for students through a balloting process. Additionally, there may be other on-campus housing options that do not require voting; in these cases, you must visit the DSA (Dean of Student Affairs) office to determine your eligibility.

The date and time for this exercise are usually announced, and students are advised to get a very fast and stable network as a large number of students will be performing this activity simultaneously. Therefore, it is of great advantage to have devices that can withstand the traffic on the site. These includes:

The student portal as the name implies is the entire online platform which provides students with various academic resources such as course schedules, contacts, grades, class materials, appointments, etc.
The school portal the school-owned, hosted, and maintained, and branded, web-based portal that is available to both students and non-students, and allows the school to interactively manage data pertaining to the services. This is where information concerning the running of the school is posted, and announcements are made there too.

To help you complete your university degree, the department has appointed a lecturer as your course adviser.

To make sure all requirements you must complete to graduate are met, Your advisor can help you choose courses to take as electives or to suit your situation or goals. Your course adviser can be said to be your “school parent or counselor”.

There are medical booths in different hostels where you can be attended to, or you could also visit the medical center.

The University of Lagos, Medical Centre is a provision for the students to meet their Medical needs. As you would have seen on your payment advice, you must have paid the obligatory fee in that regard. Therefore you have access to the clinic when you need medical help. It is advised that students finish their medicals and get accredited in other to use the facility seamlessly and also as it is a requirement for graduation.
